Premier Power Mondeo BTCC at Silverstone Classic
29th July 2013
This weekend saw the annual running of the Silverstone Classic event which sees many race cars from yesteryear come out of retirement for this one off event.
Historic Formula one, Formula Junior single seaters, Sports cars and Historic Touring Cars feature in the event which this weekend was attended by a crowd of over 90,000 guests.
Alvin Powell entered one of his record breaking 2000 spec Ford Mondeo Super Tourers in the 31 car grid. Other entrants included professional race drivers, Tim Harvey in a Labatt’s Sierra RS500, Patrice Watts in a Peugeot and current BTCC star Frank Wraffle in a Vauxhall Cavalier.
Premier Power’s Managing Director Stuart Cresswell was part of the team building the engines for the all-conquering Mondeos back in 2000 when the Prodrive team finished first, second and third in the British Touring Car Championship. Since leaving Prodrive and setting up Premier Power, Stuart has re-engineered these engines for private owners of these cars to make them not only reliable but also more durable.
Following a shakedown on Thursday at Silverstone, an early morning rolling road session on Friday unleased the Mondeo’s performance following some final engine calibration work. Friday afternoon’s qualifying session saw Alvin put the car ninth on the grid. Saturday’s race saw Alvin climb his way up to sixth having a great battle with team mate Keith Butcher in a Nissan Super Tourer before a slow puncture in the rear left tyre caused Alvin to spin at Club Corner. Alvin still managed to limp home to ninth where he started. Sunday’s race saw an amazing drive from Alvin in the early stages of race, making up several places on the first lap. Alvin then settled down and to finish a very creditable sixth place.
The quality of the weekends racing and the standard of the preparation of a lot of these cars should make this a “not to be missed event” in any motor racing enthusiasts diary next year.
